A Tree Once Preferred as War Spoils Instead of Gold
The cedar tree is known in botany as Cedrus Libani. It has a shape similar to a pyramid. Cedar is one of the most valuable first-class forest trees that grow in our country. It is an evergreen tree that can reach heights of 30–40 meters and, under suitable conditions, can live for as long as 2,367 years. Today, some of the highest-quality cedar trees in the world grow in Türkiye, although their value is often more widely recognized in Europe and America. In addition, cedar trees are sometimes decorated and prepared as Christmas trees during the holiday season.
In ancient times, states derived their wealth and power from cedar forests. The wars mentioned in the Epic of Gilgamesh were fought to gain control of cedar forests. During the Assyrian period, cedar logs and resin were taken as war spoils and tributes. The Phoenicians became a powerful maritime nation by trading cedar wood. Because it is highly resistant to water, cedar has been used in shipbuilding for centuries. As early as 2600 BC, the Egyptians built ships up to 45 meters long using cedar logs. From the Phoenician ports, cedar logs were transported to Egypt in exchange for gold, silver goods, papyrus, wheat, and olive oil.
In Türkiye, a study conducted by Istanbul University revealed that a cedar tree located in the Dibek Nature Conservation Area is approximately 2,326 years old. This research indicates that one of the oldest cedar trees in the world is found in Türkiye.
The cedar tree originated in Lebanon and, due to its durability, played a significant role in shaping world history. For this reason, the presence of the cedar tree on the Lebanese flag is not a coincidence. The importance of the cedar tree is closely related to its structure—its durability, natural oils, and distinctive fragrance.
